Balancing the Hat God Keeps Dropping at My Door

Replacing When…Then…With I Am

My intention for this blog has always been to create a digital space where I can share my journey and connect with others. I want to embrace the spirit of storytelling and reflection, embracing my inner 50-something Carrie Bradshaw personality, but with my own unique spin.

While I may not be chronicling a glamorous life in New York City or a dramatic love affair, I will be sharing authentic experiences, insights, and lessons learned. This blog will be a space for sharing resources I’ve found helpful, taking you along on road trips, sharing Miss Jaidan’s favorite recipes, and writing about the life people often view as “oh-so exciting.” But first thing’s first, let’s get this thing started.

Identifying the “When…Then…” Excuse

The concept of “When…Then…” is a revelation that perfectly encapsulates many of my ongoing struggles of getting my house set up the way I want, making self-care a priority, prioritizing spending time with family and friends,  and frankly, to launch this blog. I’d tell myself, “When I have more free time, then I’ll start.” Or, “When X big life event is over, then I’ll finally get to it.” The problem, as my Freespira coach Paige so perfectly pointed out, is that there’s always going to be a “When.” There’s always going to be something, or someone else seeking my attention and providing another reason to put off starting Life of a Hat Diva.

From Procrastination to Action: The “I Am” Mindset

This shift in perspective has been truly liberating. Recognizing that there will always be external factors and perceived obstacles. Pushing myself to have responses ready when I need  to decline something I don’t have time for, physically scheduling time for my priorities before opening my calendar to others, and forgiving myself for putting me at least in a solid third place of importance. The “I Am” mindset allows me to reclaim time and energy while declaring my intention to act, regardless of the perfect alignment of circumstances. It’s about moving forward with my passions and goals now, rather than waiting for a mythical “right time” that may never arrive.

So Let’s Get This Thing Started

For the last 10+ years I’ve been jotting topics on my phone, post-its, random pieces of paper, and napkins. Sharing with Jaidan so she can remind me, or on really bad days simply allowing them to take up space in my brain. It’s time to gather all those scattered ideas and get them into one place, like my brand-new, fabulous FROG notebook, bringing all the individual pieces together and seeing the bigger picture.

I have to remind myself that every journey begins with a single step, and mine, with this blog, is no different. We often look at our favorite bloggers and podcasters and wish we could instantly be at their level, forgetting that they too started from the very beginning. There’s no skipping to the middle; the foundation must be laid first.

My first important step was simply starting. Now, the equally, if not more, crucial phase begins: maintaining consistency. I ask for your patience and understanding as I navigate the initial stages of this blogging adventure. My hope is that you’ll find enough enjoyment in this space to stick around and witness the middle of my story unfold.
